Keir McAllister: Madame George

The Edinburgh Fringe 2018 saw the debut of playwright Keir McAllister’s “The Bench” nominated for a Scottish Arts Club Award and embark on nationwide tour. It was also published by Joseph Weinberger Ltd and is currently being translated into German.

This year McAllister is back with an ambitious new work, Madame George.

It’s been 2 years, 7 months and 11 days since her mother died and she’s still not bothered to get in touch. Then there’s the neighbour, the annoyingly intrusive Mr Doyle, who also just happens to be her last remaining client. Things are most definitely in a rut but when a message finally comes through… - will Madame George want to hear it?

This dark comedy about a psychic in a slump, is a satirical examination of isolation and delusion, its themes alluding to the social and political stramash of ideas about identity in contemporary Scotland.

The cast features McAllister’s long-term collaborator, actor and comedian Paul Sneddon (Vladimir McTavish, Bob Doolally) who also co- starred in The Bench, top radio/TV comic Jay Lafferty and stepping away from her previous charge as a director - actress and comedian Jojo Sutherland in the title role. This production will also feature a live score, composed and performed by the incredible multi-instrumentalist DaveBeMac.

It was necessary to find just the right director for this production and we were delighted when stalwart of the Scottish theatre scene, Jen McGregor - an established playwright and performer in her own right took it on. The resulting collaboration is a dynamic production that feels relevant, necessary and poignantly echoes the current time we are living in.

Co- produced by What’s This Space Productions and Gilded Balloon, Madame George is sure to be one of the must see theatre productions of this year’s Fringe
